A Walk on the Wild Side

While Hermanus may be the pulse of the Cape Whale Coast, the seaside village of De Kelders, between Hermanus and Gansbaai, is a stretch of unspoiled, wild coastline that offers spectacular whale viewing from the seaside cliffs.  Sadly, by late December when I visited the giants had moved south, but as a good omen a large pod of dolphins frolicked close to shore on my first visit and the sunsets were intoxicating.

Walk along the cliff tops and make a point of visiting Klipgat Cave via an easily accessible descent for an entirely different view of the seascape.

(De Kelders means “caves”, or in everyday Afrikaans, “the cellars”.
