Kalk Bay Harbour

Colourful in every sense of the word, this thriving fishing harbour 30 minutes from Cape Town is a hive of activity all year round.  It’s home to a handful of restaurants, but for those who like their fish super fresh, hang around long enough for a boat to come in and you can barter for snoek or yellowtail on the quayside.  Oh and watch out for the playful harbour seals who laze around waiting for scraps.

Many of the boats are wooden with the craft being passed down several generations.

Snoek – gutted and cleaned.  Not for the feint-hearted!  Note how bottle caps have been recycled to make a tool to scale the fish.

The first sign that a boat is coming in is a cloud of seagulls on the horizon that escort the boats into the harbour.  It’s an amazing sight, almost like a mirage until the boat comes into view.
